Maxine McCord

GagaSome would say that a death in the family would mar a holiday week.  To that, I say, “Sometimes, but not always.”

Maxine McCord was born in 1918, during the First World War.  She grew up in the United Kingdom, experiencing the boom of technology that the 1900′s brought, along with a depression, economic failures and triumphs, the Second World War, and watching America land on the moon.  She knew Christopher Robin personally (yes, THE Christopher Robin) and owned a set of A.A. Milne books Christopher gifted to her.  She volunteered with countless other wives during the war to help in medical camps.

Maxine gave birth to three children, one of which, Andrew, met and married my mother about 16 years ago.  She outlived her husband and, tragically, her youngest son, Ian.

She told me this story once about when she was volunteering in the war.  A young girl, teenager, found her way to one of their camps.  She was terrified and filthy and in dire need of food and water.  Maxine was one of the women who helped to take care of this girl.  When it came time to bathe her, the girl wouldn’t go near the water.  Something about it scared her to no end and no amount of coaxing or reassuring could get her near it.

After a time of trying, Maxine went to her belongings and pulled out a jar of green bath salts her husband had given her that she was saving for when he returned.  She decided they could be replaced and poured the whole jar into the warm water.  The water turned a gorgeous shade of green and smelled heavenly.  So much so, the girl, now more curious than frightened, got in the water.

My grandmother, in addition to having a heart of gold and an absolute treasure trove of stories, was also extraordinarily proper and polite and stubborn as all get out.  How my step-dad is one of the most patient, flexible people I know is beyond me.

In her later years, Maxine started to go deaf and blind.  She still maintained her independence and stayed at home.  Friends, family and, later, live-in care helped her out as much as she would let them but she never lost her stubborn independence nor her unwavering proper, polite demeanor.

Maxine passed away in her sleep in her own bed Tuesday, November 24 with her oldest son, Andy, there.  She went as peacefully as anyone could ever hope for – just closed her eyes and went to sleep.

While sadness is indeed the first emotion I and my family have during this time, I am also extremely thankful this holiday season for her and the stories she shared with me.  She opened up worlds to me that I only read about in history books and she instilled within me an undying love of Winnie the Pooh in his classic, original storybook form.

She was an amazing woman who was a mother to three wonderful children and a grandmother to even more and even managed to become a great-grandmother.  I love her dearly and she will be missed.

Seeing how, being pregnant, I’m starving pretty much all the time, Thanksgiving is a holiday I’ve been MOST looking forward to.  I cannot wait to dive into dinner and introduce the baby to the wonders that is home-cooked holiday nosh.  This year, we’re heading up to St. Louis to spend the holidays with my family.  I’ve been looking forward to this trip for months as I get to see my family maybe once a year.

The other exciting bit of news is that I get to meet my newborn nephew!  My brother’s second son was born Wednesday night, November 18, so he’ll only be a few days old by the time we get to see him.  I didn’t get to see Benjamin (Ryan’s firstborn) until he was almost three months old so getting to see Christian as a newborn baby will be quite a wonderful experience.

We are also taking Max on his first ever long car trip.  Thank goodness we upgraded to an SUV last week as making a 9 hour drive with a (probably) neurotic puppy in a coupe would have been hell on toast.  This way, we’ll have room to put his bed in the back and he’ll have plenty of space to move around and his own windows to look out.  I’m hoping, after an hour or so, he’ll calm down a bit and just ride.

We shall see.

All that to say, no news for the next week as we’ll be “on the farm” but, when we get back, we’ll have more belly pics as I’ll be at 16 weeks while we’re up there!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone and I hope your holiday week is a great one!

Planning a nursery is actually pretty fun.  There are tons of websites and books that offer a zillion different ideas.  I’m very artistic so I want my baby’s nursery to look cute, cool, fun and reflect his/her parents as well.

First, we found a nursery set at Babies R Us that was called Key”d Up.  It has all sorts of computer symbols all over it and came in dark chocolate and sort of a greyish-blue combination.  We really liked that a lot.  However, it always seemed a little dark to me.  The room for the nursery (currently our guest room) isn’t very big so dark colors would make it seem too cave-like and I definitely don’t want that.

Then, I found it.

Growing up, both Stephen and I had a love for Winnie the Pooh and everything that lived in the 100-acre Wood.  He was obsessed with the cartoons and watched them religiously and I was obsessed with the books and toys.

So, poking around on Target.com, what do I find?

Yes.

Classic Pooh is so timeless and so wonderful.  The color palette is much softer than modern Pooh and we can do a lot with it.  It’ll all make the room seem very bright and happy and a bit nostalgic.

Needless to say, everything in that category is on my registry now.

Now my mind is brimming with ideas about painting and things to put on the walls.  We just rent the house so I don’t want to go overboard but I want it to still be artistic and fun.

After the holidays, we’ll really get into getting the nursery ready – buying the furniture, getting rid of the furniture that’s in the room already, painting, etc.  One thing I would love for Christmas (hint, hint) is the boxed collection of the original A.A. Milne books with all the original artwork.  I have some ideas based on the original artwork but I would need a handy copy of the artwork, wouldn’t I?

After finding the furniture we want to get from IKEA, I started on Target.com looking through their Baby stuff.  Target is close to our house, it’s inexpensive (most of the time) and it has a wide variety of items.  Then a friend of mine who is also expecting told me to check out Babies R Us, too.

Thus began the Second Registry.

I thought about deleting one and just building one complete registry but then I noticed some price differences on the SAME EXACT ITEM between the stores so I would just delete the more expensive of the two.

Now, we have two registries.  The nursery decor and some of the more inexpensive items (when compared to said same item at BRU) are on the Target registry.  More of the “needs and recommendations” are on the Babies R Us registry. There are also fun extras on both.  I tried to keep both interesting so people would actually look at both before deciding what to purchase.

I have no idea how many showers I’ll have so having two registries may actually work out – plus we have large families and lots of friends.  I’m still endlessly tweaking them but feel free to peek if you want.

Five more months!
